Steering Column for the MG M D C F
Adamant steering column is the classic steering setup for early vintage MGs
(such as early MG Midgets and Triple-M models like the J-Type and F-Type)
The Adamant Engineering steering box was manufactured in Luton.U.K.
Unlike standard MG steering column tubes which were originally painted black, Adamant steering columns featured a polished nickel finish
Some chrome, - (whereas alternative Marles Weller steering boxes also used chromium plating).
pre-war and early-production vintage MGs
Adamant column I know and have changed their lengths.
Column length is measured on the thin walled tube from the locking collar to top bearing.
This is one of 2 I sourced from the uk, quite a few years ago! - Both were for restorations/repair on an MG M type and an MG F-TYPE,
At great expense!
One was modified to fit for length, - This one is untouched, (as sent) as a replacement - but an adamant worm and gear was found - eventually!
SOME MEASUREMENTS I FOUND? (BUT MAY NOT BE CORRECT?)
MMM M TYPE OR D?- 44 3/8”./ C 45 1/2” / D 46" TO 47" 2 chassis lengths,/ F - TYPE 53 1/4” / Minor - 41 1/8" with +/- 1/8”
The inner column rod is joined to the box by a splined/rivited sleeve so lengths can be easily altered here.
Top fitting is rivited and welded.
Adamant columns, one is F, I am happy about that, the others are 46" and 43" long and I think the M is 46 so what is the 43" one - MM or D
Adamant steering column's along with F1/F2 ... they are 46" for the 3xD's and 51+" on the F - other F has a column long enough i.e. at least 51"?.
In some historical or race-prepared vintage MGs (like modified J2 or F-Type specials), Adamant steering boxes and columns have been retained or retrofitted as a popular period upgrade over alternative factory steering configurations.
The Adamant box is a worm-and-sector/recirculating-style steering unit known for providing responsive, precise steering feel when properly lubricated and adjusted.
